Participants will explore physical science concepts of light and distance while using PocketLabs to collect and display real-time data. While this hands-on session highlights the use of PocketLabs in physics experiments, participants will gain skills that can be adapted for scientific investigations across different content areas
The abundance of misinformation demands that educators help students differentiate between tested truths and falsehoods. Generation Skeptics curriculum teaches students the importance of substantiating claims with evidence. Check out our free lessons and opportunities for educators to make $500 stipends starting GenSkeps clubs or after-school programs. www.generationskeptics.org

Our Middle School Science Department strives to get our students excited about science! We coordinate a Mad Scientist Day every year, where our whole middle school rotates through fun hands-on demonstrations. We get our community involved and have the experiments run by a local company, "The Nutty Scientists," and a club from our local University, UAH. We also have an annual STEAM Night where we have over 30 companies come and participate. We hope these engaging events will excite our students so that they can see science not just as a subject but as something fun that they would like to explore more deeply.
Look up at the ceiling when you’re at the grocery store, your school, or offices. What will you often see? Fire sprinklers! What role do fire sprinklers have in engineering and designing fire-safe spaces. In this workshop we evaluate the structure and function of a fire sprinkler to understand what can make the bulb break and how a system of fire sprinklers work to limit the impact of fire.
Explore BrainPOP Science resources for phenomenon-based learning in grades 6-8 and empower students to think, act, and write like scientists while supporting Alabama's new science standards!
Take a deeper dive into understanding the importance of learning progressions in 3-dimensional learning using STC Middle School. Experience the importance of a coherent storyline in student understanding. In this session we will explore a learning progression using density and participants will walk away with classroom resources.
What if my students were journalists, researching, writing and publishing stories, as opposed to studying for a test? This year, I put my students in the role of investigative journalist, writing for a science magazine. Using our class activities, students create magazine content, reporting and presenting their findings.

A digital video game to teach about space science, the human body, and space-focused careers will be demonstrated and used. The goals are to teach how fluid shifts caused by microgravity affect astronauts, how fluid in the body can be measured, and how engineers & doctors keep astronauts healthy.
One of the best ways for students to learn science is by experiencing it. Hands on first then add the academic vocabulary. Anytime you prepare a lesson you have to think of your audience and then differentiate as needed. My class is a combination of hands on lessons. technology based practice and then old school learning. Let's think outside the box together as we mix it up!
Explore how regional STEM research can be leveraged into place-based science learning for middle school students. Discover how partnerships with scientists and community members enhance student engagement and understanding of real-world science, fostering meaningful connections between classroom content and students’ personal, cultural, and community experiences.
The University of Alabama hosted a 7-week summer program to immerse middle school teachers in engineering research this past summer. Participating teachers will present their specific research, their experiences with engineering, and how they are translating both into their classrooms.
