This session provides an overview of the 2023 Alabama Course of Study: Science to include the revisions made by the committee.

At the end of this session, participants will learn about STEM Cases and how they work, learn to facilitate learning using a case, effectively monitor learning using the results heatmap, and differentiate instruction to enrich student learning at various levels. This presentation explores the synergistic integration of science education, literacy instruction, and language strategies to enhance learning outcomes for all students, with a particular focus on multilingual learners. By combining 3-Dimensional learning sequences with principles from the Science of Reading, we present a novel approach to science education that simultaneously bolsters literacy skills. Our research demonstrates how this integrated method creates a more inclusive and effective learning environment, particularly benefiting students navigating multiple languages. Through a case study, we illustrate the positive impact on science comprehension, reading proficiency, and language acquisition. The findings suggest that this multifaceted approach not only aligns with current best practices in education but also addresses the unique challenges faced by diverse student populations. This work contributes to the growing body of research on interdisciplinary education and provides practical strategies for educators seeking to create more equitable and effective science classrooms.

We need to talk about Biology Standard 12b. Standard 12 and the associated substandards address the formation of reproductive cells, sources of genetic variation and impacts of environmental exposures. However, some of the examples do not reflect current scientific understandings. Let’s talk about how to ensure your classroom explanations both meet the standard and are accurate.

The University of Alabama hosted a 7-week summer program to immerse middle school teachers in engineering research this past summer. Participating teachers will present their specific research, their experiences with engineering, and how they are translating both into their classrooms.

For my research, I have enrolled in “analytical isotope geochemistry” where I get to work on a mass spectrometer that dates the age of asteroid fragments. My course goal and presentation subject is to find ways to teach these complex concepts to secondary earth science, chemistry, and physics students.
